Auditor General Maksim Acevski held a working meeting with the President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Ms. Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, to deepen cooperation and enhance the State Audit Office's role in ensuring transparency and accountability in the work of state institutions.

At the meeting held at Villa Vodno, emphasis was put on SAO results and the strategies that will guide its further development.

The focus was on the importance of audits as a key mechanism for creating a stable and accountable control environment. SAO's future activities will be directed toward further strengthening of effectiveness of the audit of public funds, as well as enhancing institutional responsibility and transparency in the operations of state institutions. “Our goal is to improve the audit processes and create a more efficient and transparent environment where every public financing will be in the interest of the citizens,” emphasized Mr. Acevski.

In this context, the Auditor General highlighted the importance of the new State Audit Law, which significantly improves the operational and financial capacity of the State Audit Office. With the new Law, SAO will gain greater independence in its operations providing for an increase in the efficiency of auditing public funds and playing a stronger role in ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the operations of state institutions.

The President Ms. Siljanovska-Davkova expressed her appreciation for SAO’s thorough, expert, and professional approach to performing its duties, which ranks the institution among the most respected state bodies, both nationally and internationally. Ms. Siljanovska-Davkova expressed support for the systematic and transparent approach to the work, emphasizing the need for legal and responsible management of public goods and resources, and sanctioning illegal practices. In this context, the President confirmed her support for the State Audit Law and the need for the constitutional anchorage of the SAO, stressing the SAO’s vital role in ensuring transparency and accountability in the operation of state bodies.

The meeting was yet another confirmation of the institution’s continuing commitment and efforts to improve the public sector and increase citizens’ trust in the work of state bodies.
